The input and participation from faculty and staff is vital to creating meaningful and lasting change when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion at the University of Michigan.
Over the course of the last few years, we heard from thousands of individuals who value an environment where people from different backgrounds are welcome, safe and respected. You demonstrate these values in the work that you do and in your aspirations for the future of our community.
Through our university-wide initiative to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion, you are taking on the hard work to make this vision reality.
Some of you are serving in leadership roles implementing the strategic plans in schools, colleges or units. This is difficult work that requires commitment, skill and perseverance.
Others are seeking out training and skill development in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion. In just the first six months, thousands have signed up for courses such as Unconscious Bias or have taken part in training through their departments. This number will continue to grow as we expand our offerings.
U-M consistently ranks as a top employer in higher education. Our faculty and staff feel passionately about what we stand for and the role we play in society. Because of that passion, you are willing to take on the many challenges this initiative brings.
With a more diverse population, we are better equipped to serve our missions of education, research and patient care.
With a more equitable and welcoming climate, we can better attract and retain world-class students, faculty and staff.
And with strong support for one another, we can thrive and unleash our potential.
Thank you for all the work you’ve done already and all the work that is yet to be done.
