RESPONSE OF DEFENDANTS REGENTS OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, ET AL. TO FIRST AMENDED
MOTION TO INTERVENE

This case challenges the right of the University of Michigan to use race as part of a broad array of qualifications and characteristics in making admissions decisions. The defendants will vigorously defend this case. The Proposed Defendant-Intervenors have a substantial interest in the subject matter of this litigation. The defendants do not oppose their motion to intervene in this case.
