Pelosi: Supreme Court Upholds Affirmative Action in Education

Press Release Posted on Monday
June 23, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of the University of Michigan’s admissions policies:

“Every American deserves the opportunity to realize the American dream, and we must support programs that give every student the chance to succeed. Affirmative action in education gives students a ladder to help them climb over the barriers to opportunity. Today, the Supreme Court strengthened that ladder for millions of students around the country by supporting affirmative action and ensuring that America remains the land of opportunity.

“I have always believed that in America, the beauty is in the mix. From that beauty flows our strength, our boundless creativity, and our versatility. The Supreme Court today supported that view by confirming that the government has a compelling interest in promoting diversity in education.”
