National Academies: Supreme Court Rules on Affirmative Action

June 25, 2003

The U.S. Supreme Court this week ruled on two separate challenges to affirmative action, supporting the University of Michigan's right to consider race as a factor in its law-school admissions, while striking down the more explicit points-based preference system the school uses in its undergraduate admissions.

The National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering were among a group led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that filed a brief to the court supporting Michigan's stance. "In an age that will increasingly be driven by science and technology, we feel that it is critical that the leaders of science and engineering reflect the strength and diversity of America," NAS President Bruce Alberts said about the case last February.
