Three University of Michigan alumni and Detroit natives were honored for their career achievements and national contributions with induction into the University of Michigan Detroiter Hall of Fame.
Lifelong Detroit advocate Tonya Allen (BA’94, MSW’96); renowned poet, publisher and editor Dudley Randall (MSLS ’51), and award-winning journalist and media expert Daniel Okrent (BA ’69) were inducted into the latest class. The fourth annual event was held on April 29 at the U-M Detroit Center.
With impactful local alumni and nearly 200 years of history between university and city, “the University of Michigan and Detroit are inextricably linked,” says Robert Sellers, U-M’s vice provost for equity, inclusion and academic affairs.
“What makes the University of Michigan great is the same thing that makes Detroit great…[it has] a lot to do with the people, particularly the people from Detroit.”
The induction ceremony also featured a moderated panel discussion with Allen and Okrent.
Topics included the inductees’ personal experiences growing up in Detroit, attending U-M, the evolution of the city, and the future of education.
