Please join the Rackham Graduate School chapter of the Bouchet Honor Society as we host a national conversation regarding graduate student mental health. This event will feature Rackham Associate Dean Arthur Verhoogt, co-chair of the Rackham Graduate Student Mental Health Task Force; Yale University’s Mary O’Brien, director of clinical training with the Department of Psychology; and a panel of graduate students representing Bouchet Honor Society chapters from across the nation.

This year’s summit, DEI: Nurturing the Heart, Mind and Soul, explores the role of the arts in supporting our humanity (heart), mental health and wellness (mind), and religious/spiritual diversity (soul).These topics are distinct and interconnected, as each addresses components of self-identity and influence in the world. Additionally, as we reflect on our experiences navigating a global pandemic and the social justice issues that were illuminated over the past two and a half years, this theme assembles some important aspects of our coping toolkit.

Join us in community to practice mindfulness meditation, a life enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal, largely guided, practice utilizes evidence based cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat. As one form of contemplative practice, mindfulness meditation can support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action in the world. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Life and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) invite you to a student-centered open house that will include a live DJ, 360° photo booth, free food and cotton candy, prizes and giveaways! Digital accessibility is a hot topic, especially after the recent release of the associated Policy/Standard Practice Guide (SPG) at UMich. What is included in this umbrella term, and how does it relate more broadly back to disability justice and inclusion at the U of M? Our expert presenters will start by discussing what digital accessibility is and why it matters for more inclusive organizations and products. This will be followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and describe their own experiences with digital barriers and successes. The conference will include several sessions in October and November.

Structural inequities across social institutions such as education, healthcare, and the workforce, for example, have impacted the mental health of Black communities. This event will feature a conversation among experts who will discuss mental health challenges among Black communities across the lifespan, including intersections of spirituality and gender.

Tabbye Chavous, Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, will provide framing remarks. The panel conversation will be moderated by Elizabeth R. Cole, Director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID).

Andrea Carlson’s recent commission, Future Cache, is on display at the University of Michigan Museum of Art through the summer of 2024. In this installation, Carlson combines text and imagery to bring attention to the history of violent displacement of the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band from northern Michigan. For her Penny Stamps talk, Carlson will present on this work, as well as an overview of her career, her changing perspective, and her plans for the future. Open to the public and free of charge.

This workshop focuses on the role of religious and spirituality identities as an important aspect of DEI work on campus. Participants in this workshop will develop an understanding the variety and complexity of religious, secular, and spiritual (R/S/S) identities on our campus; understand why support for religious pluralism and spiritual development is important on a public college campus; learn about key religious accommodations and resources and how to access them in their work to support faculty, staff, and students; and discover ways to get involved in DEI work around R/S/S identities.

The Center for Faith and Scholarship welcomes New York Times bestselling author and Professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University, Kristin Kobes Du Mez for a lecture discussing her recent book Jesus and John Wayne. An expert on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics, Du Mez will explore Evangelicalism, masculinity, Christian Nationalism, and the rise of Donald Trump.
